GMC issues guidance on under-18s

1 min read Health
Doctors in England and Wales have been issued with guidance on working with young people aged up to 18 for the first time by the General Medical Council (GMC).

The 47-page document, 0-18: Guidance for All Doctors was published last week and is a 77-point guide outlining how doctors should behave when dealing with children and young people. Advice includes respecting children and young people's rights and involving them as much as possible when making decisions about their care. Michael Keegan, policy adviser for the GMC's standards and ethics team, said the advice was meant to clarify how the 250,000 doctors across England and Wales dealt with children and young people in a range of situations.

"Most good doctors are doing this every day already," he said. "But there are areas of the law with issues, for example the interplay between child protection and respecting the child's confidence. The guidance is there to help doctors through the legal and ethical conditions they find themselves in."
