Scotland: Glasgow rolls out childcare scheme

Glasgow City Council is to roll out a flexible childcare programme to families across the city and add new services after a successful pilot in two areas.

The Working for Families Fund has provided tailored childcare for 450 parents in the disadvantaged Easterhouse and Castlemilk areas since its launch in 2003.

The project includes a new Sitter Service, where parents who work outside the traditional 8am to 6pm period will be able to access affordable babysitters.

Another new initiative, the Pre-Intermediate Labour Market Project, will allow parents to continue to receive benefits while gaining part-time work experience in the childcare sector.

The Scottish Executive has provided 2.5m-a-year of funding for the Glasgow programme for 2004/05 and 2005/06.
