Lone parents in Fife and Aberdeenshire will be given help to find suitable childcare while efforts are made to extend childcare opening hours and provide additional places.
The Department of Work and Pensions is funding the pilot, which will run until March 2006 and be part of a UK-wide project.
The scheme will also look at other factors that may need to be addressed to help get lone parents back to work.
Shelley Gray, policy officer for Children in Scotland, welcomed the pilot but said priority should be given to building on achievements, such as the provision of free pre-school places for three- and four-year-olds.
