Scotland: Childcare workers seek reassurance

Scottish childcare workers sought reassurance on plans for registration at a Scottish Social Services Council conference on Monday.

All childcare workers will be required to gain specific qualifications as part of the registration process. While the move has been broadly welcomed, childcare providers are anxious about the long-term funding implications of the increased salaries that a better-qualified workforce will command.

Mairi Clark, spokeswoman for the Scottish Independent Nurseries Association, said: "There is ongoing discussion on how we ensure the cost is not just passed on to parents."

Speaking before the conference, the council's chief executive, Carole Wilkinson, acknowledged there were concerns about cost and the timetable for registration.

But she said registration had benefits for the profession as a whole, including improving workers' self-esteem.
