Scotland: Councils join free childcare pilots

Three Scottish councils are to take part in a trial offering free childcare to two-year-olds.

The Scottish Executive confirmed that Dundee, Glasgow and North Ayrshirewill be involved in the multi-million pound trial. A spokeswoman said itwould be a two-year pilot. Full details will be announced in the nextfew weeks.

She confirmed the schemes would target vulnerable children includingthose living in poverty or with "difficult circumstances".

The Scottish scheme follows similar programmes in England and Wales.

About 16,000 disadvantaged two-year-olds in Wales will benefit throughFlying Start. Meanwhile, 15 English councils are taking part in atwo-year trial to give free childcare to around 12,000 two-year-olds.
