As CYP Now went to press, the government's white paper on social mobility was expected to announce an investment of more than £50m for free education and childcare for two-year-olds in low- income households.
This is in addition to the £100m announced in 2007 in The Children's Plan to fund up to 20,000 free places for two-year-olds.
The move signals a commitment by the government to eventually provide free childcare for all two-year-olds and recognises the impact high-quality childcare can have on improving outcomes in later life.
But, although she welcomed the investment, Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day Nurseries Association, warned that the money must be allocated through local authorities correctly.
