Schools to take centre stage in bid to transform childhood

Schools are to be the hub for all children, young people and family services under government plans to transform childhood announced yesterday (11 December).

Speaking ahead of the publication of the Children's Plan, Children's Secretary Ed Balls said his vision was for all services to be based within schools.

Balls said he wanted to see youth offending teams working together with youth services to support children, young people and their parents. "I want all services co-located together, supporting parents and children from nought to 19, tackling barriers to learning, working together to tackle cases of poorer performance and intervening early before things go wrong," he said.

The plan reinforces the need for schools to engage with Every Child Matters and will propose a greater emphasis on children's development.
