Schools Admissions: Audit Commission voices concerns

The Audit Commission has backed the children's sector's concerns about the Government's education reforms and called for a stronger code of admissions.

In its response to the education white paper, the public spendingwatchdog recommends: "The status should be altered from an advisory to amandatory code." MPs on Parliament's Education and Skills SelectCommittee called for a mandatory admissions code last year and schoolsminister Jacqui Smith recently said Government plans to publish a newcode had been postponed indefinitely so ministers could "reflectfurther" on the issue (Children Now, 4-10 January).

The Audit Commission says poor children are set to lose out under thecurrent plans to give schools more control over admissions. It says: "Wehave reservations about the consequences of schools making autonomousand unchecked decisions."
