School clubs focus too much on study

Extended schools are in danger of being dominated by study and homework clubs and risk neglecting other Every Child Matters outcomes, two children's experts have warned.

Adrian Voce, chief executive of Play England, and Chris Waterman, executive director of the Association of Directors of Children's Services, attacked the extended schools agenda at a House Magazine conference.

Voce said extended schools should meet all children's needs, not just their role in study support. "Are we addressing children's needs?" he said. "What about the other four and a half Every Child Matters outcomes? Extended services seem to be focused on study support."

Waterman added that many young people would actually prefer to spend quality time with their families instead of spending the hours from 8am to 6pm in a school environment.
