Scheme gives boost to summer sports

Education
Children and their families are getting better access to summer activities thanks to funding from the Big Lottery Fund's 750m New Opportunities for PE and Sport (Nopes) scheme.

Independent research into the scheme found almost 3,000 schools and community facilities doubled their summer activity provision for schoolchildren after receiving funding. It also found people in Nopes-funded areas were able to access up to 70 per cent more activities than before the funding.

Projects due for this summer include England-wide football in the community schemes run by the Football Foundation, which got £30m from the fund.

A mentoring programme that supports secondary school pupils to provide sports coaching to pupils in primary schools will also take place.

The Nopes evaluation found the sports facilities it funded also benefited children in term time by having a positive impact on pupils' attitudes and behaviour.
