Safeguarding: Procedural review called for by DfES

Organisations responsible for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children have been asked to review their policies and procedures in new guidance published last week by the Department for Education and Skills.

The call forms part of draft statutory guidance on section 11 of the Children Act 2004, which places a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children on agencies including local authorities, the police, primary care trusts, probation boards, youth offending teams, prisons and Connexions.

As well as outlining strategic level features that all agencies should have in place, the document lists specific responsibilities for each organisation.

For example, each police force must identify a senior manager to lead on children's issues.

The deadline for responses to the draft guidance is 24 June 2005.
