The announcement that its 2007/08 annual health check will focus on children's safety has been made in the regulator's first report into the issue. The report brings together three years' worth of data and found that while there had been improvements in areas such as training, a significant minority of health trusts were still not complying with basic standards.
In 2006/07's annual health check, 4.4 per cent of trusts were not carrying out appropriate checks on staff, including Criminal Records Bureau enquiries. In the same year five per cent of trusts were also failing to meet requirements to ensure children are safe in NHS settings or that staff dealing with children have the appropriate training. Of these, four trusts were a particular concern since 2006/07 was the second year in succession that they had not met this requirement.
