Children's commissioner calls for improved safeguarding

The children's commissioner for Wales has backed calls for councils and health boards to improve their safeguarding children arrangements.

Keith Towler was responding to three reports into safeguarding by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) and Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW), carried out as part of a nationwide response to the death of Baby Peter in Haringey.

One of the reports, into the work of Local Safeguarding Boards, found boards were relying too heavily on social workers and were blighted by a lack of co-operation between organisations.

The healthcare report into safeguarding within the NHS found that a large number of staff had not had a Criminal Record Bureau check and many health professionals were reluctant to share information with each other.
