Welsh children's commissioner calls for child-centred approach to tackling poverty

1 min read Child poverty
Children and young people in Wales risk facing a lifetime of inequality unless their government adopts a child-centred approach to tackling poverty, the Children's Commissioner for Wales has warned.

Launching his first strategy on the issue, Keith Towler argued that the Welsh government’s approach to tackling poverty focuses too much on families at the expense of children.

This is because the Welsh government's Tackling Poverty action plan, published in June this year, integrated efforts to reduce child poverty into an overarching strategy that covers children and adults.

Towler's child poverty strategy sets out his vision of how to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people, as well as highlighting examples of good practice in Wales.

It advocates putting the child at the centre of policy measures and recognising children’s rights as set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
