The Healthcare Commission last month published its annual snapshot on the state of NHS services in England.

The figures set out here provide an overview of the challenges facing services for children and young people - they include rising obesity, a small decline in teenage pregnancies and the need to improve child protection.

7% of children have a long-standing illness that limits their activity

£3.2bn (Reported total budget for children's services 2007/08)

NHS employment

The NHS in England employs:

More than 7,000 specialist paediatric doctors (excluding trainees)

More than 17,000 registered children's nurses

More than 12,000 staff are employed in managing or delivering specialist mental health services

Prescriptions

5% of all items of prescription medication dispensed in the community to children aged 16 and under
