WHAT IS THE ANNUAL HEALTH CHECK?
It was introduced by the Healthcare Commission in 2005 and is designed to assess whether NHS organisations are meeting government standards in a variety of areas. Data is based on self-assessments and checked against other sources, including the views of patients and the public.

It tends to be through feedback from patient groups, patient and public involvement forums and overview and scrutiny committees - all of which are adult forums. The commission has a programme of patient surveys it uses to cross-check with the trusts' own performance assessments. In practice, the voices of children and young people have been relatively absent to date, although new surveys are to be piloted which may include their experiences of hospital.
