The number of pregnant teens has risen for the first time in seven years.Annual figures published by the Office for National Statistics last week show conceptions increased by one per cent between 2006 and 2007. The rise may initially sound insignificant, but it means there were an extra 1,150 pregnant teenagers in England and Wales in 2007.

What's more, the figures sometimes mask what is happening on the ground. The London Borough of Lambeth has historically had one of the highest teen pregnancy rates. But the latest figures show the council has one of the most successful teenage pregnancy strategies around.
