Each of the community projects will test different methods of supporting runaways.
The two-year pilots will run in County Durham, Leicestershire, Liverpool, London and Torbay. The Department for Education and Skills is spending a total of 2m on the pilots.
A departmental spokesman said: "This programme will be used to develop good practice so that services for young people will be in line with local strategic priorities for services for vulnerable young people."
The pilots follow on from the Social Exclusion Unit's 2002 Young Runaways report.
Liverpool's project will try to help young people restore relationships with their families and is backed by 420,000 from the education department.
