Since then, further academic work on the issue has been promoted through various publications from the society. Gwyther Rees, among others, has been at the forefront of policy advocacy for young people who run away, and should take considerable credit for securing the political attention that this issue has now been accorded through the work of the Social Exclusion Unit.
The unit's report, Young Runaways, was published in November 2002, and calls for an action plan to improve services for young runaways, not only in terms of ensuring their safety but in providing financial support and improving their longer term outcomes.
