More beds for young runaways needed across the UK

1 min read Social Care
A network of emergency accommodation for young runaways should be created across the UK, a government commissioned report has concluded.

The Children's Society report reveals there are currently only nine refuge beds for young runaways to cater for the 100,000 under-16s that run away overnight each year.

Commissioning, Delivery and Perceptions of Emergency Accommodation for Young Runaways was published as part of the government's Young Runaways Action Plan, published last year.

It recommends that a network of emergency accommodation should be developed along with a wider package of crisis support for young runaways. Researchers suggest that the network should include universal and targeted work to prevent young people running away and provide follow-up support to help reduce the chances of children running away again.
