The Thrown Away report is part of The Children Society's Safe and Sound campaign, which aims to make England a safer place for young runaways.
It finds that family breakdown, violence and rejection are the main reasons for leaving home, a picture that is corroborated by many of the agencies working with youth homelessness.
Among the 1,026 16- to 26-year-olds that homelessness charity Centrepoint worked with in 2001, 34 per cent gave physical violence as a reason for leaving, while 92 per cent said they left because they felt pushed out - not by choice. And half of these young people had run away from home before reaching 16.
