Night buses, 24-hour helplines - there's a lot the UK could learn from services for young runaways in the US, as Andy Hillier discovers.

"I grabbed what I could and left," recalls Carl. "It was only then that it struck me I was on my own."

He had been a peer mentor at school so knew there was a national number to call for help. But he was disappointed with the response when he dialled.

"They put me through to another county where I was told there was nothing they could do because it was past midnight," he says. "My first reaction was that I would have to sleep rough until the morning, but I managed to contact one of my friends and he let me sleep on his floor."
