Runaways: Framework needed to protect young

It is supporting a 10-minute bill put forward by Helen Southworth, Labour MP for Warrington South, due for its second reading on 12 May. Southworth said: "The purpose of the bill is to set up a national strategy to safeguard missing runaways and make services more effective." The Children's Society said its one-bed refuge in Torbay for under-16s is surviving on additional funds after Department for Education and Skills pilot funding ran out in March. Only 10 beds exist in the UK for runaways under 16, with six in London and three in Scotland.
