Road safety: Child seats law for Northern Ireland

Children in Northern Ireland must use child restraints in cars under legal changes proposed last week. The Government consultation suggests that children under three should be strapped into a child restraint when travelling in a car or van.

The consultation also states that rear-facing child seats should not beused in the front seat of cars fitted with airbags. The proposalsincorporate new EU rules that child restraints should be used instead ofadult seat belts in most circumstances.
