The challenge
As youth services struggle for their share of dwindling children's services budgets, it is becoming increasingly important for them to show their value to councillors and external funders in an instantly understandable way. Rotherham Young People's Services manager Rod Norton says: "We will live and die by the quality that we deliver, so we were looking for a framework that would help us in this process."
The solution
Last year, The National Youth Agency (NYA) met this need by launching the first Youth Service Quality Mark, commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills.
Early last year, Rotherham was going through a process of reviewing its services as it prepared for its Joint Area Review and enhanced youth work inspection. So it seemed a good time to work towards the quality mark, too.
