Resources: Talking point - Should the UK ditch the pint and the mile?

1 min read

The European Commission wants the UK to set a date for adoption of the metric system. How do young people feel about pints and miles? Are they an important part of our heritage, a distinct part of our cultural identity?

Or would another system of measures work just as well?

Many beers have been sold in 500ml bottles and cans for some time. What difference would it make if pubs did the same? A pub measure of gin and vodka used to be a fifth or sixth of a gill, but now it is 25ml. Who noticed?

Talk about how far the UK has got with its metrication programme. Does anyone still use feet and yards rather than metres? Do young people know shops and markets that use pounds and ounces rather than grams? Discuss how much of a problem this is and whether something should be done to stop it.
