Resources: Talking point - Should self-harmers be taught how tocut?

1 min read

Nurses are to discuss a radical approach to young people who self-harm. They are considering helping them do it more safely. They may decide to show young people where on their body it is safer to cut and point out what the riskier areas are. They may supply clean and sterilised blades to help reduce the risk of infection. Talk to young people about the thinking behind the idea. Do they agree with those who say that if you cannot stop someone doing something harmful, it is better to help them do it more safely?

Talk about why this is controversial. Nurses are trained and dedicated to care for patients. Some will find it very hard to discuss ways of helping someone to cut themselves. How would young people react if they were nurses?
