When older people in hospital do not eat, this can be accepted by nurses as the patient's choice. But older patients may be confused, and may not know the food tray is there. They could lack the muscular strength or co-ordination to use the cutlery. Or they may be depressed and need encouragement to eat. Talk about how much time busy nurses have to help.

While some elderly people need assistance, others resent being spoon-fed.

How would young people feel if a bib was tied round their necks and they were fed like a baby? Discuss the realities of maintaining people's dignity while avoiding starving them.
