Five British soldiers died when a Lynx helicopter crashed in Basra earlier this month. When British forces went to secure the crash area they were pelted by petrol bombs and blast bombs, and came under attack from gunfire, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars.

Did young people realise that the situation had become so dangerous for British troops posted there?

British troops have been based in the south around the city of Basra.

Their job is to assist the Iraqi security forces to build their capacity so they can take over responsibility for the security of their own country.
