Is it an important act of solidarity that Prince Harry goes with his comrades and joins the other young service personnel facing bombs and snipers around Basra? Or does it put them all at greater and unnecessary risk of harm?

It is expected that the 22-year-old prince will lead 11 soldiers patrolling in a Scimitar armoured reconnaissance vehicle. Two troops died in a similar vehicle blown up by a roadside bomb last month. Would young people have given Harry a safer desk job?

The decision to deploy Harry is to be kept under continual review. What might change the decision? If the violence becomes worse, should the prince be withdrawn?
