RESOURCES: Talking point - Is the UK becoming too overcrowded?

There are always racists and extremists who try to spread hatred by claiming the UK is overcrowded. Their arguments are a thinly disguised attack on immigrants, particularly Black and Asian people.

But there are also serious and respected academics and ecologists who think that Britain has too many people. The Optimum Population Trust (optimum means best) says the ideal population for the UK would be around 30 million. It is now estimated as 59 million and rising.

What does it mean to say there are too many people? How do young people define overcrowded? Does it vary depending on where you are in the country?
