The news is the preferred type of programme for most adults. But more 16- to 24-year-olds say they like to watch entertainment. Does that mean they are less interested in worthy subjects than older people? Or just more honest?

Ask young people how many hours of television they watch each week. What do they think about it? Is it worthwhile, or mostly a waste of time? Many people complain bitterly that there is never anything good on, but then watch TV all the time. Why is this?

Do young men and young women like different programmes? Surveys have found that men prefer factual shows and women like dramas. Why might this be?
