The law says that all schools have to get together in a daily act of collective worship. The worship must be "wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character". The law is more often broken than observed. Her Majesty's chief inspector of schools, David Bell, recently pointed out that more than three-quarters of establishments fail to meet this requirement.

Ask young people for their view of assemblies. What is the point of them? Is it good to meet together as a group? How meaningful is the religious element of them? Given that most schools don't bother with a daily assembly, should they become weekly or monthly?
