What do young people think zoos are for? In the past, exotic animals were kept in captivity as private playthings for the royals and the wealthy. Then they were places of entertainment for a curious public. Were these good reasons to keep animals captive?

Zoos nowadays justify themselves as places of necessary scientific and conservation work. Veterinary skills developed in zoos can be used to help animals anywhere. Species that may not survive in the wild can be bred in a protected environment. Do young people think this is important work?
