Performing arts, including theatre skills, "stand up" performance and role play, have long been accepted as a positive method to help develop social and communication skills for people diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder.

Author Cindy Schneider is an autism consultant in Pennsylvania in theUS, and she describes her book as a "how-to" manual for starting yourown drama group with youngsters who have social cognition deficits. Shealso describes her considerable experience of running a drama group andher specific work with young people affected by Asperger syndrome.

The book uses a "step-by-step" approach to explain how to create agroup, access venues and materials, and run a range of workshops thataddress some of the socio-communication needs of young people withAsperger syndrome. An extra touch is that most chapters begin with ashort anecdote describing the beneficial experience of a young personbelonging to one of the author's groups.
