Author Yuko Yoshida recommends readers with Asperger syndrome go throughthe book with a key support carer. I believe this is good advice, asmany of the issues are complex and need greater explanation and need tobe put in context. It is worth noting the book has been edited by expertLorna Wing following its translation into English from Japanese. I feelWing would not have bothered if the author did not display a deepunderstanding of the syndrome.
The book clearly demonstrates how the syndrome presents itself but itdoes not purport to diagnose individuals. What I found refreshing wasthe way it reinforced the importance of a positive attitude towardsAsperger syndrome. The author lists far more advantages thandisadvantages to the condition. Depression, anxiety and obsessions arecommon to the disorder and it is essential that key workers are familiarwith the strategies to successfully treat them. However, belief in thestrengths and contributions made to society by those with the conditionneed to be understood and Yoshida shows a great empathy with this.
