Asperger syndrome: Crime awareness drive launched

The National Autistic Society is launching a drive to help children with Asperger syndrome learn about the risks of crime.

The charity is concerned that children with the condition are far morelikely to be victims of crime than those without it.

It has joined forces with the Co-operative Bank to run a pilot programmein eight schools, beginning later this month. The project will be thefirst to deal with the issue and campaigners hope it will be rolled outacross England.

Anja Rutten, head of social programmes at the society, said: "Youngpeople with Asperger syndrome often don't have the skills we rely on todeal with threatening situations. This means they are particularlyvulnerable and they need help to learn how to recognise dangeroussituations."
