The book gives a useful definition of adolescence and its rationale for focusing on this important stage of development. It also concentrates mainly on the process - what actually is experienced by both the adolescent seeking help and the professional providing it.
The approach used to study this process was through group discussion, an approach called a Balint group. The authors describe the origins of this approach in some detail and how to set up such a group. Several chapters are dedicated to case studies, which highlight some central themes when consulting with teenagers. These include confidentiality, aggression, hidden agendas, depression and diagnosing the real problem.
