Resources: Review - A fresh approach to family attachment

1 min read
This book describes the technique of family attachment narrative therapy. It presents its background and describes the process of constructing narratives with children to promote attachment and improved behaviour.

The narratives, which are constructed and told by parents and carers inthe third person, are unique to the child and their familysituation.

The book is well laid out and takes readers though the process startingwith a description of how the child can be affected by their earlierexperiences.

The authors then devote chapters to the four different narrative types:claiming; trauma; developmental; and successful. The narrative chaptersdescribe the purpose of the narrative and how to tell them. Examples ofcases are provided throughout and problem-solving tips are given at theend.

There is a good mix of theory and practical examples to allow the readerto see where the theory may fit with their child. And I was reassured tofind explanations of behaviours often seen with our children along withpossible strategies to help us understand things a bit better. Forinstance, one of my concerns was how older children would respond tothis type of storytelling, but the text provides strategies for childrenwho seem resistant or who spot straight away that this is theirstory.
