Resources: Review - Music therapy work across the pond

1 min read
Essentially, this book describes a unique personal approach to music therapy as developed by the author during years of practice in a paediatric hospital in the US.

It lists themes that have arisen in the therapist's work, the kind ofmusic she makes in a session and instruments she uses. Lorenzato offersan individual opinion on how to work successfully with medical staff, and thoughts on how music therapists might help families to cope withthe hospital experience. There are helpful sections on common diseasesand terms encountered in paediatrics, which may be useful for studentscoming across such language for the first time.

Although an overview of the themes presented in this work is describedin practical terms, the author doesn't delve into the subjects indepth.

Enthusiasm is conveyed, but there is perhaps too much emphasis onpersonal opinion combined with a very informal writing style. The readeris therefore never really introduced to the more complex needs andemotional states of the young people.
