Resources: Review - A combination of theory and practice

1 min read
This book covers the importance of play, the impact of conflict on children and their carers, and the role of play in terms of a child's development. It also explores the detrimental consequences of a child being denied play.

Hyder then goes on to offer practical suggestions on how to support refugee children and describes the therapeutic role of play.

The book's title gives the impression of a theoretical overview of the field, but this does not tell the whole story. The book actually links selected themes from theory with day-to-day practice.

At one end of the spectrum, the book describes theories of early brain development and its importance; research into infant neuroscience; and historical and modern theories of play. At the other end, two chapters discuss curricula to promote play and how to gain practical help, such as checklists for sources of local support and how to assist a refugee child to settle into a new group. The range of topics covered is therefore surprisingly wide.
