Resources: Review - Handy resource for carers and adopters

1 min read
This handbook is exactly that; a book that should be kept to hand by foster carers, adopters and social workers alike. It is accessible both to read from cover to cover, or to dip into as and when issues arise.

It is explanatory, supportive and encouraging but, above all, practical.

The authors have divided the book into three parts, which are furtherdivided into concise chapters. This makes the book easy to navigate andthe information easy to digest.

Part one starts by explaining the core concepts of attachmenttheory.

This is followed by descriptions of four attachment patterns, thefactors likely to give rise to them and the subsequent behaviourschildren may display.

Most useful were the subsections within each pattern that explored howchildren so affected would cope with joining a new family at differentages and the resulting challenges for the carers. As I read this part, various children I have cared for popped into my head in recognition ofthe experiences and behaviours being detailed.
