So voluntary organisations need to increase their likelihood of getting a good one. Trust the quick guide.
1. Too many charities recruit trustees using methods that are narrow and passive. So says the Charity Commission in a recent report. It reckons that, as a result, organisations get the incorrect impression that good trustees are scarce. But if they looked for them more energetically, and from a wider range of ages and social and economic backgrounds, they would find that there are plenty of potential trustees around.
2. Energetic ways of recruiting sound exhausting, but they don't have to be. They might include paid advertising in the press, as well as active networking among likely agencies and individuals. There are also trustee brokerage services, which are not as widely used as they might be. The National Council for Voluntary Organisations has a micro site dedicated to this.
