1. Board members are the non-profit organisation equivalent of the board of directors of a company. They meet at set times and make the big decisions. They are often on hand between meetings to help staff. The major difference is that they don't take a share of the profits.

2. Trustees are unpaid, but not unrewarded. The undoubted status, the buzz from getting involved in a worthwhile venture, the opportunities of networking - all can be satisfying. It is a bit like any form of volunteering. Except that instead of being an assistant or helping hand, you are managing the show.
