They are the ones who can end up needing to apply for jobseeker's allowance. The quick guide won't turn you into a benefits adviser, just a handier youth worker.
1. Jobseeker's allowance (JSA) is the basic welfare benefit paid to those who are looking for work or training. For those with a relevant work history, there is contribution-based JSA. But most under-18s will be looking at income-based JSA. Even then, they will only qualify in circumstances such as estrangement from parents, severe hardship, or if they are one of a couple who has responsibility for a child.
2. The income-based JSA for 18- to 24-year-olds and those 16- to 17-year-olds who qualify is 44.05 a week. It is normally paid fortnightly, in arrears. It can be paid by giro or by credit payment into a bank or similar account. In some circumstances, it can be collected in person from the Jobcentre. Applications are made at the Jobcentre Plus office. Under- 18s who are claiming should first register for work and training at their local Connexions service.
