Goals: To engage young people and promote inclusion
Funding: No funding has been obtained for the project but grant applications are under way
When the Urbis exhibition centre was built in 2002 in the heart of Manchester, the intention was for its setting in Cathedral Gardens to provide an area for local people to relax in.
But since the gardens also attracted large numbers of teenage Goths, skaters and other youth groups who claimed the space as their own, Urbis embarked on a youth engagement programme rather than turn them away.
Ruth Ibegbuna, head of learning at Urbis, says: "People got nervous of them. But these young people are the future of museums and galleries and the idea that they are a threat to anyone is a barrier between communities."
