Goals: To provide outdoor education opportunities for young people in Surrey

Funding: 150,000 from the New Opportunities Fund

A 60-foot canal boat, recently bought by Surrey Youth Service, is being used to teach young people about the county's historic waterways, build confidence and teach navigational skills.

The 12-foot-wide broad-beam boat, named Angel Blue by young people, has been built slightly wider than normal to accommodate hydraulic lifts to the lower cabins, ramps and handrails so wheelchair users can get aboard.

Moored at Dapdune Wharf in Guildford, the boat provides short residential trips for 10 to 12 young people, and is used mainly by excluded 14- to 19-year-olds, says Chris Gaskin, business development manager for the Surrey Outdoor Leisure and Development Unit at Surrey Youth Service. "We bought the boat because the waterways are important transport routes through Surrey and we had no way of utilising them for young people," he says.
