What it is: Build your own canoe project, Gateshead Goals: To give young people the experience and challenge of building their own canoe Funding: Received 6,000 from The Canoeing Foundation and Awards for All for equipment and expedition costs

Learning to build a canoe from scratch is an achievement but one group of young women has gone even further by completing a two-day expedition in their boats.

Run by Wayout in Gateshead (WinG), an outdoor education centre that is part of Gateshead Youth Service, the project has been using canoe building as a way of engaging young people in adventure activities.
