Remember the days when Dad used to load the Betamax cassette into the video player? Or when the first DVD recorders came on to the market?

Fumbling around with such technology that requires you to load something into a player looks set to become a distant memory for today's young people. Instead, when they can't see the latest must-see show they're increasingly going to the internet and downloading the episode they've missed. Not only can they download on to their PC, but also on to iPhone or even Nintendo Wii.

Some of the UK's largest broadcasters have got in on the act. The BBC has its iPlayer, which allows viewers to watch selected shows up to seven days after broadcast. PC users can download programmes to watch up to 30 days later. The BBC does not charge for this.
