Resources: Funding focus - Girls on the Move

1 min read
What's it all about? Some 40 per cent of girls drop out of physical activity by the age of 18. This funding programme put together by The Robertson Trust, Scottish Sports Association and Scotland's Healthy Living campaign is designed to support more young women to become physically active and improve both their physical wellbeing and their self-esteem.

What does it fund? There are two strands - the Participation programme for young women aged nine to 18 and the Leadership programme for those aged 16 to 25. The participation programme is aimed at young women who are not physically active, particularly those in disadvantaged areas or who face barriers to involvement such as young women with disabilities and young mums. Applicants should provide new, fun opportunities for young women to get involved with physical activities and also try to get young people involved with the design and delivery of programmes. Money can go towards staff and capital start-up costs, including equipment and increased general overheads for an organisation as a result of running the project. The Leadership programme is designed to support and encourage young women who want to undertake leadership courses and become leaders of physical activity in their local communities.

Who can apply? Recognised charitable organisations working in Scotland.

Organisers say they expect the majority of applications to come from small local organisations such as youth clubs, Girl Guide groups, community centres, homelessness projects or support groups for young mums.

How much is available? Up to 5,000 each.

Application procedure: There is no application form - applicants are invited to write in with a list of key details, including a description of the proposed activity, budget, targets, details of how young women have been involved in the design and a copy of recent accounts. The scheme, which was launched in 2005, will run for an initial period of three years and applications may be made at any time. Full details are available at the web site www.girlsonthemove.org.uk.
